Salary: Band D £28,302 - £31,755 per annum
Fixed Term Contact to 31 March 2025
Hybrid - (Homeworker) - 40% (2 days) homeworking, 60% (3 days) on premise each week (pro-rata for part-time working) It is important to note that you will be expected to attend Moss Way Police Station in Sheffield when working on premise.
Based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire; the Hydrant Programme provides support for the work of the NPCC child protection and abuse investigation (CPAI) portfolio and is the national lead for the Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Taskforce launched by the Prime Minister in 2023.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Researcher to join the Hydrant Programme’s analysis and research team. This person will have a commitment to applied research and have previous experience of supporting an analytical team or researcher in the handling of data within this subject area together with effective communication skills across Microsoft programmes, along with a strong interest in being part of a team supporting national policing.
It is essential that applicants meet the following criteria:
- Experience of researching and collating data
- Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to produce accurate and timely reports.
- Proven problem-solving skills, ability to use own initiative and work under pressure.
- Effective communication skills, being articulate and able to debate issues.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of performance and intelligence management processes and techniques.
- Good computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Good literacy and numeracy skills
It is desirable that applicants meet the following criteria:
- A working knowledge of Evidence Based Policing principles
- Previous experience of or trained in the use of Microsoft Excel or analytical and data mining tools such as i2, iBase, Power BI, Microsoft Reporting or equivalent.
Also desirable is a working knowledge of the Police National Database (PND), Police National Computer (PNC) and wider knowledge on Crime Management Systems including Niche/Athena and Connect.
You will also need to be at ease with reading and categorising large volumes of CSA material.

After the implementation of a restructure in August 2022, Operation Hydrant changed its name to The Hydrant Programme, who also deliver the governments National CSE Taskforce. It is worth noting that there have been slight changes to the role profile/job description in this time and this is currently being amended to reflect these changes. Although the nature of the work is very similar to that described in the role profile/job description some of the responsibilities now differ. A significant change of note is the reading of child sexual abuse and exploitation crimes from across the UK in order for the Research Team to categorise the nature and scale of these crimes. This data feeds back into national policing and government to inform policy and strategy.
There is an occasional requirement to travel and work at other locations and venues nationally as may be required*
*Travel and expenses will be reimbursed in line with police staff council terms and conditions of service.
Due to the nature of the role, security is crucial, therefore you will be required to pass and maintain the relevant security clearance to perform the role.
Hours of work are 37 per week Monday to Friday; specific pattern to be negotiated. This post is offered on a temporary basis to 31.03.2025, however Hydrant Programme is grant funded and there is possibility of an extension to this date.
